What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.
The test is designed to measure your ability of the English language in the following areas:
- Writing
- Speaking
- Reading
- Listening
After the test you will be given an overall band score and a score from 1- 9 in each section.
Academic IELTS Requirements for Registering as a Nurse in Ireland or the UK
UK Nursing Registration
Those who wish to register with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) must meet the minimum Academic IELTS required scores of:
- Overall Band Score (OBS): 7
- Writing: 7
- Speaking: 7
- Reading: 7
- Listening: 7
Irish Nursing Registration
Those who wish to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) must meet the minimum Academic IELTS required scores of:
- Overall Band Score (OBS): 7
- Writing: 7
- Speaking: 7
- Reading: 6.5
- Listening: 6.5
For NMBI registration you are exempt from taking the Academic IELTS exam if you have trained in:
The European Union (EU) | Canada | United States of America | Australia | New Zealand
What is the IELTS exam format?
The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes and is split into 4 sections.
- Listening Section: 30 minutes
- Reading Section: 60 minutes
- Writing Section: 60 minutes
- Speaking Section: 11 –14 minutes
